The Little Rippa Brewing Company is a microbrewery located just exterior of Mount Gambier. It’s not just food, there are a range of “makers” here too.

From November or December to March the lake has a vibrant blue color, regarded as attributable to calcium carbonate which precipitates out of resolution within the warmer floor layer during these summer time months. In the cooler months it returns to a grey-blue color when the water mixes more completely, re-dissolving the calcium carbonate and bringing more tannin to the floor from under. Blue Lake can be visited by taking the Lakes Walk, an impressive monitor taking in Australia’s highest peaks and ridges and every of the glacial lakes. It is a 31km spherical trip from Thredbo, or a bit less if ranging from Charlotte cross. I’ve done the walk a number of occasions in different weather and seasons, and while Blue Lake was a stunning sight every time, it did not look any extra blue than different lakes.

Umpherston GardensLocated on the Jubilee Highway 3 km east of the city centre, Umpherston Gardens is a remarkably beautiful sinkhole which has been landscaped with terraced gardens, hanging crops and palm timber. It is floodlit at night time.The sinkhole was named after James Umpherston who bought the land in 1864. Umpherston was an area councillor, a parliamentarian and President of the Mount Gambier Agricultural and Horticultural Society for thirteen years. In 1884, when he had retired, he determined to create a garden within the sinkhole. He constructed a lake and had a boat which offered short rides for guests. Sadly, when he died in 1900 the sinkhole fell into disrepair and became overgrown.
As you aren’t able to go swimming in the Blue Lake, head only a few kilometres south of Mt Gambier to the Little Blue Lake, where you probably can jump in and have a swim. Be aware of your environment though, as Lifeguards don’t patrol the world. The “Blue Lake” watercolour differs in fashion and colouring from the other Mount Gambier works attributed to Angas. I think this unsigned work is definitely by Gill and was intended for Angas’s South Australia Illustrated project and painted around May-June 1845. Gill’s authorship is supported by the clear relationship along with his wash drawing and likewise by comparing fashion.
Mount Gambier is located 435 km south east of Adelaide by way of Murray Bridge and Naracoorte. Originally, the lake’s location was occupied by a 120m hill, but many years of sluicing operations turned the hill right into a 68m deep gap which later crammed with water to kind the lake. It was a lovely blue when I saw it, but I’m not convinced it was more blue than another lake can be on a sunny blue-sky day.
